Rays bullpen construction: The more outs, the better

BRADENTON — Enny Romero threw the fastest pitch of the season for the Rays in 2015, clocking in at 99.3 mph during a September game at Yankee Stadium. FanGraphs had Romero averaging 96.1 on his fastball during his 23 appearances with the big club.

But Romero’s velocity, while a valuable asset to the Rays bullpen, isn’t necessarily the biggest asset. At least it won’t be if Romero can get at least four outs, and maybe even six from time to time.

When asked about the bullpen construction, more specifically the need for high velocity, Rays manager Kevin Cash said, “We want guys that can get outs.
