ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays’ catching situation became more crowded late Wednesday when the team acquired Hank Conger from the Astros for cash considerations.
The six-year veteran, perhaps known best for celebrating a teammate’s home run with a robot dance in the dugout, will join Curt Casali and Rene Rivera in spring training for a three-man competition for the two catching spots on the Opening Day roster.
That’s assuming Rivera, one of nine arbitration-eligible Rays tendered a contract on Wednesday, is still with the club when pitchers and catchers report to Port Charlotte in February.
“It’s something that will sort itself out as we get closer to Opening Day,” Matt Silverman, the Rays’ president of baseball operations, said Thursday.
