Former first baseman Carlos Pena, known for his defense but who became one of the most prolific power hitters in Tampa Bay Rays history, will retire from the team where he made his biggest impact.
Pena, 37, will sign a contract with the Rays on Friday and immediately announce his retirement after 14 major-league seasons, the Rays announced today.
Pena, currently a studio analyst for MLB Network, spent five seasons with the Rays. He joined the then-Devil Rays in 2007, and the next year, the Rays achieved their first winning season in franchise history, reaching the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
