Morton’s Sunday performance a snapshot of first half success

ST. PETERSBURG - Charlie Morton took the mound for the Rays on Sunday looking to earn a series split against New York in the final game before the All-Star break. He kept the Yankees offense quiet to wrap up the first half of his season.

Entering play on Sunday, Morton posted an American League-leading 2.36 ERA over his first 18 starts of the season. After his 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball against the Yankees, Morton’s grasp on the ERA title grew tighter as his figure dropped to 2.32 for the season.

The lone run against Morton on Sunday came on a second inning solo home run off the bat of Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner.
