Rays first baseman James Loney was suspended one game on Tuesday for making contact with umpire Paul Nauert during an argument in Saturday's 5-4 victory over the A's.
He has chosen to appeal, so the discipline will be held until the process is complete. Loney was also levied an undisclosed fine.
After Nauert called Loney out on strikes in the sixth inning, Loney flipped his bat and slammed his helmet to the ground. Then, after Nauert ejected Loney, Loney approached him and the two touched before the first baseman was restrained.
"We all know the rules," Rays manager Kevin Cash said after the game.
