It’s September roster expansion time, which around here usually means...well, not much. But this year is different, with two surprise, most likely injury-related promotions, bringing up Andrew Velazquez and Nick Ciuffo.
Yesterday, the Rays promoted reliever Jaime Schultz. They also added shortstop/centerfield Andrew Velazquez to the 40 man roster and promoted him to the big club. In a corresponding move to clear room on the 40 man roster, Jose Mujica was moved to the 60-day disabled list.
The 23 year old Velazquez came over from Arizona in the Jeremy Hellickson deal and was immediately ranked #10 in the system thanks to a breakout 2014 that saw him swipe 50 bags for South Bend.
