The New York Times caught up with Hideki Matsui, who is now playing for Team Matsui in the championship game of the Nippon Club’s 40th annual President Cup baseball tournament on Randall’s Island just outside of Manhattan.

Matsui was last seen in the big leagues during the 2012 season when he was playing Designated Last Out for the Tampa Bay Rays before being waived mid-season only to never be seen in the big leagues again. Three years later, he is the starting pitcher for Team Matsui and as a handicap, he is hitting right-handed in a game with an all-dirt infield and only a few dozen people in attendance.
