Defensive error lets Twins get past Rays 6-4

MINNEAPOLIS — While the Minnesota Twins kept showing off their glovework, the Tampa Bay Rays were victimized by a critical defensive mistake in the seventh inning that paved the way for a 6-4 setback.

Tim Beckham’s two-run homer had just forged a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh before the Twins answered immediately against Kevin Jepsen, Tampa Bay’s third pitcher of the afternoon.

Torii Hunter’s one-out single past short and a walk to Joe Mauer set the stage for Saturday’s key at-bat. Jepsen fielded Trevor Plouffe’s come-backer cleanly, but he decided to go to second base for a potential double play instead of throwing to first for the sure out.
