ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays welcomed back former opener Ryne Stanek during Sunday’s game against the Marlins, playing a tribute video to the right-handed bullpen arm on the jumbotron between the fourth and fifth innings.
Stanek, who was dealt to Miami on Wednesday, said he was surprised to be involved in a deal at the trade deadline.
At the time of the July 31 deadline, the Rays were on the road in Boston, but Stanek remained in St. Petersburg to continue his rehab for right hip soreness. Shortly before the clock struck 4 p.m., Stanek was playing catch with bullpen catcher Scott Cursi.
