ST. PETERSBURG -- Chris Archer carved his name into Tampa Bay Rays history Wednesday night, but the New York Yankees left with a much-needed victory.
The Yankees won 3-1 in front of 13,299 at Tropicana Field to keep pace with first-place Toronto in the AL East.
Archer entered the night needing four strikeouts to become the all-time single season strikeout leader for the franchise. He reached that in the third inning when he struck out Jacoby Ellsbury to tie Scott Kazmir’s 2007 record of 239 and Brett Gardner for No. 240. Archer then struck out Alex Rodriguez to end the inning.
