'Slap Shot' town celebrates its hockey roots before Bolts game

Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins players mingled with fans this morning in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, site of the teams’ nationally televised preseason game tonight.

The red-carpet event took place before morning skates at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Johnstown, with a population of about 20,000, is hosting the game after earning the title of Kraft Hockeyville USA in online voting. During the Kraft Foods promotion, small towns across the country submited stories showing their hockey spirit.

The arena was used as the home of the fictional Charlestown Chiefs in Paul Newman’s 1977 film “Slap Shot.
