Ray Emery not 'done,' aims for backup role with Lightning

JOE SMITH | Times

There was plenty of uncertainty this summer for Ray Emery.

The veteran goalie was an unrestricted free agent, and with training camps just a few weeks away, he didn't have a job. Emery, 32, a nine-year NHL veteran, was checking his options for camp invites, and had an overseas possibility.

"I didn't really know," he said.

But a week ago, Emery got a call from the Lightning, which had just found out backup Andrei Vasilevskiy would miss 2-3 months following surgery to remove a blood clot. Emery jumped at the chance to come to Tampa Bay on a camp tryout contract, participating in his first Lightning informal practice Tuesday at the Ice Sports Forum.
