For the first time since Steve Yzerman took over as general manager for Tampa Bay, the Lightning did not make a pick in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Rather than utilizing the 28th overall pick, Yzerman picked up an additional second round pick after making a trade with the New York Islanders, picking up the 33rd and 72nd overall pick in this year’s draft, giving Tampa Bay 10 scheduled picks for rounds 2-7, which get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday at BB&T Center in Sunrise.
“Just the way our list shapes up, we think that in picking at 28, there is a group of players we think we can get moving back five spots and then picking up another pick,’’ Yzerman said.
