Jaguars hire Doug Marrone as head coach, not Mike Smith

Mere hours after reports suggested Mike Smith was the frontrunner for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coaching job, the Jaguars hired in-house candidate Doug Marrone instead, per a slew of media reports, most notably Adam Schefter’s. Big Cat Country has all the details there.

That means that Mike Smith, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator, will not be hired in Jacksonville. That has to be a relief for the Bucs and their fans, who are desperately hoping to hold on to a coach who revitalized the defense.

Smith isn’t safe yet, though. Several other teams still have head coaching openings, and Smith already interviewed with the San Diego Chargers.
