TAMPA — The ability to check out of a play that’s destined to fail and into one a better one is a skill most quarterbacks develop over time.
Apparently, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is ahead of schedule. In Sunday’s 26-19 victory over the Saints, Winston proved once again he is already adept at reading defenses.
“I’ve said many times, he’s a sharp character,’’ offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said of the No. 1 overall draft pick. “He can handle the checks. That’s not an issue.’’
Late in the second quarter, on a first-and-10 play from Tampa Bay’s 37-yard line, Winston checked into a play that offered a one-on-one matchup for WR Mike Evans down the right sideline.
