Bucs notes: C Hawley signed to 2-year contract

TAMPA — The Buccaneers made a point this year of rebuilding their defense with players familiar with coach Lovie Smith’s version of the Tampa 2 defense.

Now, it seems, they’re taking a similar approach on offense.

The Bucs signed former Falcons C Joe Hawley to a two-year contract Monday, and Hawley thinks his familiarity with first-year Bucs coordinator Dirk Koetter’s scheme should allow him to play sooner rather than later.

“The terminology is different, but after I get a little refresher course, I should be good to go,’’ said Hawley, a six-year NFL veteran who worked with Koetter the past three seasons in Atlanta, where Koetter was the offensive coordinator.
