Buccaneers claim punter Spencer Lanning off waivers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are claiming punter Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Cleveland Browns, per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. Lanning was waived after the Browns traded for punter Andy Lee, which is not exactly a big vote of confidence in Lanning.

Understandable, given that Lanning put up below-average statistics last year, with a 22nd-ranked 44.3 yards per punt, and a 17th-ranked 39.2 net yards per punt. Of course, both of those numbers are significantly better than Michael Koenen's, who is both massively overpaid and somehow still on Tampa Bay's roster.

Lanning will have to compete with Koenen and second-year player Andrew Wilder for the team's punting job.
