TAMPA — Given the season he had a year ago, Garrett Gilkey can hardly believe he still has a place on the Buccaneers roster, much less a place at the top of the depth chart at right guard.
“I’ve seen guys get cut in this league for a lot less,” Gilkey said of a season in which he committed a penalty every 23 snaps and spent one particular Sunday afternoon playing like a walking blooper reel.
It was Week 13. The Bucs played the Bengals at Raymond James Stadium, where they lost 14-13, in part because Gilkey committed four penalties and forced his team to settle for an early field goal after he rolled a shotgun snap back to quarterback Josh McCown on a third-and-goal play from the Cincinnati 10-yard line.
