Why didn't Syracuse football ever hire Randy Edsall? It's complicated

Editor's note: This is the second in a two-part series on former Syracuse assistant Randy Edsall, who is returning to the Carrier Dome this weekend as the head coach of Connecticut. Edsall played quarterback for Syracuse from 1976-79 before transitioning into a coaching role under Frank Maloney and Dick MacPherson from 1980-90.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The question that doomed Randy Edsall from coaching his alma mater is one, 27 years later, he holds no regret for how he answered.

Syracuse football reached a crossroads at the height of its resurgence, at the time Dick MacPherson left after the 1990 season to coach the New England Patriots, and the school wanted to hire within the program to sustain momentum.
