Ithaca, NY -- As basketball fans fill out their NCAA basketball tournament brackets one thought comes to mind: What are the odds that someone, somewhere, will fill out the perfect bracket?
Math professors around the country have put the odds at 1 in 9.2 quintillion. That's 9.2 followed by 18 zeros.
It other words, the odds are not in your favor.
Cornell University mathematics Professor John Pike, who specializes in probability and statistics, offers this advice on increasing the probability of creating the perfect bracket.
The 1-in-9.2 quintillion estimate is based on the assumption that each guess of the outcome of a particular game is like the toss of a coin, he said.
