Syracuse runner Justyn Knight ran the fastest 5,000 meters in the world this year while winning this weekend's Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford.
Knight won the race with a time of 13:17.51, beating a field that included both college and professional runners. He beat second-place Sam McEntee, an Olympian in 2016, by .04 seconds. Knight's time shattered his previous school record of 13:27.23.
McEntee competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for Australia and finished 18th in his heat. Knight's time would have been good enough to finish 14th in the finals at the Olympics.
