Syracuse, N.Y. - The idea came to Eric Devendorf a little over a week ago as the temperatures began the drop.

Devendorf, the former Syracuse University basketball star who now works with the team as a strength and conditioning assistant, decided he could start an effort to collect new or lightly-used winter coats for children.

"It was just a random idea,'' Devendorf said. "So I put it out on Twitter. I just said I'm doing a winter coat and hat donation.
