Syracuse, N.Y. -- Tyus Battle stepped into his new role as Syracuse's go-to guy on Tuesday and he did it just in time to save the Syracuse Orange.

Battle, Syracuse's leading returning starter after the departures of Andrew White and Tyler Lydon, figured to be the focal point of Syracuse's offense this season.

In just the second game of the year, Battle appeared comfortable in his new role.

The 6-foot-6 sophomore registered a career-high 28 points to help Syracuse fend off a challenge from the pesky Iona Gaels, 71-62, in front of 19,601 fans at the Carrier Dome.
