Mike Hopkins, Jim Boeheim’s Designated Successor at Syracuse, Takes Washington Job

Mike Hopkins, a dutiful steward on the sidelines with Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim for more than two decades and Boeheim’s designated successor, accepted the head-coaching job at the University of Washington on Sunday.

The move came a day after Syracuse’s loss to Mississippi in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The hiring was confirmed by Washington and was first reported by ESPN.

Hopkins, 47, had been appointed as the team’s coach in waiting, first in 2007 and then again, more formally, in June 2015. In March 2015, Boeheim had announced that he would retire after the 2017-18 season.
