Syracuse, N.Y. -- Clayton Welch was sitting in class when his phone flashed with an incoming call one day early this May. It was a number from New York that he didn't recognize.
After the class ended, Welch, a quarterback at Butte College in Oroville, Calif., checked his phone and noticed he had a voicemail.
The voice of Dave Boller, Syracuse football's director of player personnel, buzzed into his ear. The Orange was interested in learning more about Welch and his recruitment.
"It was out of the blue," Welch said during a phone interview on Friday.
