HARRISBURG, Pa. – Syracuse offensive lineman Sam Heckel is one of the five finalists for the 11th Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award.
The Rare Disease Champion Award is presented annually by Uplifting Athletes to a leader in the world of college football who has realized his or her potential to make a positive and lasting impact on the rare-disease community.
The winner will be determined in an online vote and officially announced on Dec. 6 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
A redshirt sophomore, Heckel was diagnosed with congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare blood disorder, when he was a toddler.
