Former Syracuse star Michael Gbinije will be waived by the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, according to a report by The Detroit Free Press' Vince Ellis. Ellis cited anonymous sources.
The Pistons face a Saturday deadline to decide whether to fully guarantee Gbinije his $1.3 million his contract for the upcoming season.
Gbinije would still be paid $500,000 by Detroit for the second year of his contract because it was partially guaranteed but by waiving him the Pistons would save around $800,000, along with freeing up a roster spot for a player deemed more promising.
Gbinije battled injuries as a rookie last year and, when healthy, put up middling numbers in the D-League, especially considering his advanced age.
