A statistical edge and a blazing finish weren't enough to earn Brittney Sykes the WNBA's Rookie of the Year Award.
Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray was named winner of that award on Tuesday.
Gray received 30 votes from a national panel of 40 sportswriters and broadcasters. Sykes, of the Atlanta Dream, received the other 10 votes.
Sykes, out of Syracuse University, was named the WNBA's Rookie of the Month for July and August. She led all newcomers in points per game (13.9) and rebounds per game (4.1). Gray posted 13 points and 3.9 assists per contest and led first-year players in steals with 1.
