Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse football kicker Andre Szmyt was named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, becoming the school's first consensus All-American since Dwight Freeney in 2001.
It's the latest honor for the redshirt freshman from Vernon Hills, Ill., who went from walk-on starter to scholarship kicker in a breakthrough season in which he was named the country's top kicker and won the Lou Groza Award.
"I'm still taking it in," Szmyt said last week. "Winning the job a week before the season started, winning a scholarship, it's all been kind of crazy.
