It turns out last week was the right time to back against Manchester City – which was good news for those of us who were on Liverpool to win with both teams scoring.

The bad news? That ship has probably now sailed for the season as City get back on course and cruise, at skinny prices, towards the Premier League title, starting with the visit of Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez parked the bus, took the keys out the ignition and slashed the tyres to make sure when City arrived at St James’ Park just after Christmas but despite attempts to choke the life out of the game, before going down 1-0, it was a strangely entertaining 90 minutes.
