Paul Clement was 10 years old when his father died. He got home from school on the last day of March, 35 years ago, to find his mum waiting for him with his grandfather. They broke the news to him together.
He could not grasp that his dad, Dave, an accomplished defender who had played for QPR, Bolton and Wimbledon and won five England caps, had killed himself at the age of 34 after sinking into depression, but he did realise that his own life had changed for ever.
His younger brother, Neil, who was to go on to play more than 250 matches for West Bromwich Albion, was only three and so Paul became the man of the house.
