Sunderland's search for a new manager is on hold amid uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club.
Chief executive Martin Bain had pursued Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes as replacement for David Moyes only for the Scot to turn down their offer on Thursday.
It has left the relegated Black Cats back at square one in their hunt for a manager to lead them into the Championship and first-team coach Robbie Stockdale will take the reins in the short term.
