This Saturday was meant to be FA Cup final day. In the third of our series looking back at classic finals, CRAIG HOPE tells the tale of Sunderland’s epic win.
Micky Horswill spent the night before the final eating sweets while watching television as Brian Clough and injured Leeds star Jack Charlton told viewers how Sunderland, of the Second Division, had no chance.
Meanwhile, Joe Bolton, Horswill’s room-mate, was on the bed next to him, busy painting the entire team’s boots.
‘We were getting £250 a man to wear these Stylo boots,’ recalls Horswill, then 20 years old with a shock of ginger hair.
