Sunderland are in talks to sign Bury striker James Vaughan for a fee of £850,000.
The 28-year-old worked with manager Simon Grayson while at Huddersfield Town and will become the latest former Everton player to join the Sunderland ranks.
Grayson remains keen to sign Aiden McGeady from the Toffees and has asked to take Max Gradel on loan from Bournemouth.
Vaughan scored 24 goals last season after moving to Bury from Birmingham City.
