Ex-Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat criticises the club's unwillingness to spend: 'Maybe it's better to go down'

Former Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has claimed the club do not spend enough money to compete in the Premier League and suggested they need to be relegated in order to rebuild and move forwards.

Advocaat arrived at the club in March 2015, where he kept Sunderland in the Premier League, following a pattern of managers such as Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet and Sam Allardyce that were appointed to save the Wearsiders from the drop.

However, following Allardyce's departure to join England during the summer, Sunderland have made another miserable start to the campaign.
