Sunderland have suffered back-to-back relegations and will be playing in League One next season — but Wigan have bounced back yet again to the Championship.
Chris Coleman’s Sunderland were leading 1-0 with four minutes to go against Burton Albion when their former striker Darren Bent silenced those booing him with a close-range finish before Liam Boyce headed the winner for the visitors in the 93rd minute.
And in another calamitous twist, Sunderland’s players did not even realise they were down until they were back in the dressing room.
That’s because Burton’s fixture against fourth-bottom Bolton next weekend means one of those teams will have at least 41 points — one more than the maximum of 40 the Black Cats can get.
