Peter Reid has blamed the pessimism of Sunderland manager David Moyes for the reason his former club are 'going down with a whimper'.
The ex-Black Cats boss was a guest of owner Ellis Short at last month's home game with Burnley and left with the impression the entire club was 'flat' following an uninspiring goalless draw.
Moyes warned supporters to expect a relegation fight after the first home game of the season and they have been at the bottom end of the table ever since.
They are now 10 points from safety and have not scored in more than 11 hours.
