North Texas started Saturday by honoring a legend before its Conference USA against Louisiana Tech.
The university unveiled a statue of “Mean” Joe Greene outside Gate 2 of Apogee Stadium in front of a crowd of hundreds that included plenty of fans, as well as Greene’s family, friends and former teammates.
Greene played defensive tackle for the Mean Green from 1966-68 before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. Greene won four Super Bowls with the Steelers, as well as numerous individual honors, such as 10 Pro Bowl selections, two Defensive Player of the Year awards and the 1969 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
