Saido Berahino must ask for permission to take another penalty at Stoke after missing from the spot against Southampton to extend his barren run to 32 games.
Mark Hughes said Xherdan Shaqiri granted Berahino the chance to score having been fouled in the box but the 24-year-old would have to consult with the dugout before stepping up again.
Fraser Forster saved Berahino's penalty meaning a late Peter Crouch goal was required to earn to the three points and Hughes does not want to take any chances in future.
Berahino has failed to convert his last four penalties in a sequence without scoring that stretches back 20 months to February 2016, when he found the net against Crystal Palace.
