Saturday's early kick-off lacked genuine quality until Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri fired the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time with a stunning effort from outside the area.
Despite entering the game in the relegation zone, Stoke looked much the better side but their hard work was undone midway through the second half when Marc Albrighton's fierce cross from the right was fumbled into his own net by Butland.
