Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey announced in a letter on Stanford's website that he is skipping his senior season and entering the NFL Draft:
After three incredible years at Stanford, I've decided the time is right to enter the NFL Draft.
Since I was 6 years old, I've wanted to play in the NFL. It's been on every list of goals that I've ever written. Now, it's time to take that step. There's nothing more I can put on film.
I've talked to many in and out of the game and received advice from people whose opinions I greatly respect, including Toby Gerhart, who was here for a game this season. I took their feedback and came to a conclusion: I'm ready.
I talked to Coach Shaw about everything. He completely agreed. Really, it just made sense. The opportunity is right in front of me.
Simply put, this is the best time to live out my dream.
McCaffrey entered the season as one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, and while he was not named a finalist, he did rush for 1,603 yards and 13 touchdowns on 253 carries. Last year, as a sophomore. McCaffrey set the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a single season (3,496 yards) and rushed for over 2,000 yards.
College underclassmen apply for early draft eligibility before the Jan. 16 deadline. McCaffrey will play in the Sun Bowl against North Carolina on Dec. 30.
He is projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick.
