The # 3 Stanford Cardinal defeated the #2 Indiana Hoosiers, 1-0, on the pitch to take home its third national championship in three years. Stanford is the first program to win three straight men’s soccer NCAA titles since Virginia (1991-1994).
Both teams’ defense continued to shine in the first half both going scoreless heading into the locker room then again in the second half. But in the second overtime, redshirt junior midfielder Sam Werner scored at the 102 minute from a throw-in to seal the deal. Stanford’s final record finishes at 19-2-2.
The Cardinal were lead again this year by head coach Jeremy Gunn, who’s been at Stanford since 2012.
