Stanford's Ahead of Most Countries in the Olympics

Stanford got four medals (all silvers and all in swimming) on the first day of the Olympics. Maya DiRado took silver in the 400m IM. The other three (Simone Manuel, Lia Neal, and Katie Ledecky) took silver in the 400m freestyle relay. All four finished second place to world-record performances.

If Stanford were a country, it would be tied for fifth place in the medal count (having earned medals in two events). The only four countries ahead of Stanford in the medal count are: the US (5), China (5), Japan (5), and Australia (3).
