Stanford discontinues 11 varsity sports

Stanford University has announced the discontinuation of 11 varsity sports, penned in an open letter from Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Persis Drell and Bernard Muir.

The President, Provost and Director of Athletics announced, among many other items, that they’ve agreed to discontinue the following sports following the 2020-21 academic year:

Men’s Fencing
Women’s Fencing
Field Hockey
Lightweight Rowing
Men’s Rowing
Co-ed Sailing
Women’s Sailing
Squash
Synchronized Swimming
Men’s Volleyball
Wrestling

It’s a tough day for the Stanford Athletics Family, largely seen as a program with one of the largest endowments in the country. Still, that is addressed in the open letter as well.
