Back in the 2013 recruiting cycle, Stanford had a chance to offer future California quarterback Jared Goff. The Cardinal passed on that opportunity -- just as they did two years later with future UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen -- and instead chose Ryan Burns as their guy.
So Stanford bypassed two touted, polished California natives -- both of whom ended up starting as true freshmen in college -- yet picked Burns, a rugged quarterback from Virginia who had hardly taken a snap from under center. Burns spent most of his high school career running the football out of the triple-option.
