When defenses force turnovers, coaches are happy. Turnovers take scoring opportunities away from a team's opponents and give that team extra possessions and chances to score on offense.
How teams take advantage of those opportunities is vital. A pick-six or a scoop-and-score creates a sudden change in momentum. A forced turnover, followed by a long, point-producing drive can be a slow burn to success. Sometimes, however, a turnover was quickly followed by another turnover or a three-and-out.
The following stats aren’t exactly indicative of a team’s success. Take UCLA, for example, which scored 78 percent of the time following a turnover, but finished 8-5.
