It was one of those plays. To start the eighth inning, Wong charged Keon Broxton's bouncer that pitcher Jordan Hicks couldn't make a play on. Wong gloved it just as he stepped on the infield grass and, with his momentum carrying him toward home, submarined a throw across his body to Carpenter at first while falling down to beat Broxton by a flash. Carpenter let out a yell and the Busch Stadium crowd gave Wong a standing ovation.
That was the top of what turned out to be a great eighth for Wong. He followed that up with a bases-loaded double in the eighth to drive in two runs and give the Cardinals some needed breathing room as they beat the Brewers 5-2 on Friday night and cut Milwaukee's lead in the wild-card race to a half-game.
