The Cardinals’ Carlos Martinez and San Francisco’s Jeff Samardzija sailed through five scoreless innings in just more than hour Saturday night at Busch Stadium, with Martinez allowing one hit and Samardzija three.
Neither team really had a scoring opportunity until the Cardinals put two runners on with two out in the fourth. But Yadier Molina grounded hard to Giants first baseman Brandon Belt for the final out.
The Cardinals went a man down in the third inning. Hot-hitting second baseman Kolten Wong came out of the game because of a left elbow problem, replaced by Greg Garcia, leaving the Cardinals with only three bench players _ Jhonny Peralta, Tommy Pham and Eric Fryer _ with Matt Adams having been dealt to Atlanta earlier in the day.
