MILWAUKEE • As the Cardinals rewire how they hold a late-inning lead through absences, additions and alterations to the bullpen, the solution they would prefer is already there.
Jonathan Broxton has been all along.
“You start talking about what we need in that ’pen,” manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday afternoon. “I mentioned Trevor (Rosenthal) being gone. You mentioned Alex (Reyes) being a starter right now instead of being in the pen. A big piece of this is Jonathan Broxton. He’s a guy that from the beginning our anticipation was having him as a late inning guy and when you start talking about the Siegrists and the Bowmans and the Ohs being beat up and used a lot — Broxton is going to have to get it done.
