LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. • Unable to come to an agreement with the Cardinals on an extension to stay on the roster while he recovers from elbow surgery, free-agent Trevor Rosenthal is unlikely to sign for 2018 and instead try to score a one-year deal for 2019 that allows him to reassert his place as a closing candidate. His agent, Scott Boras, said it’s “doubtful” that Rosenthal will pitch in 2018.
“This is much like Greg Holland, what we did, where he is rehabbing during the course of the season,” Boras said.
Holland missed a season, signed a deal with Colorado then was able to become a free agent this winter by finishing a specified number of games for the Rockies.
